For his 1972 campaign Richard Nixon emphasized the strong domestic economy and his accomplishments in foreign affairs, such as establishing communication with China.  These factors combines with a tumultuous campaign season for the Democratic Party led to a landslide victory for Nixon, amassing  520 electorial college votes to George McGovern’s 17.
